WINE TASTING AT A QUINTA IN PINHAO
A tour of a "quinta" (wine estate) near Pinhao offers a deep dive into the heart of the Douro Valley's winemaking tradition. Your experience will begin with a guided walk through the terraced vineyards, where you'll learn about the unique characteristics of the region's soil and climate, as well as the different grape varieties grown there.
Following the vineyard walk, you'll be led to the winery itself, where you'll see the traditional and modern methods used to produce Port wine and Douro DOC table wines.
The tour culminates in a guided tasting session. You'll sample a selection of the quinta's wines. An expert will guide you through the tasting notes, explaining the flavors and aromas of each wine and providing insights into their production. It's a comprehensive and sensory experience that connects you directly to the source of one of Portugal's most famous exports.
TOUR OD CASA DE MATEUS AND THE CUORO MUSEUM
A tour combining the Casa de Mateus and the Douro Museum offers a fascinating blend of architectural splendor and regional history.
Casa de Mateus Your visit to Casa de Mateus, a magnificent Baroque mansion, is a journey into Portugal's aristocratic past. You'll explore the stately home's opulent interiors, which are filled with priceless furniture, art, and historical artifacts. Outside, the grounds are equally spectacular. You can wander through the meticulously manicured gardens, famous for their geometric designs, sculptures, and a beautiful reflecting pond that perfectly mirrors the palace's facade, a view famously depicted on bottles of Mateus Rosé wine.
The Douro Museum Located in Peso da Régua, the Douro Museum serves as the cultural heart of the wine-producing region. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century building and is dedicated to telling the story of the Douro Valley. Through a series of engaging exhibits, you'll learn about the geology and climate that make the region unique, the history of winemaking, and the lives of the people who have shaped this UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The museum's collection includes historical tools, artifacts, and multimedia displays that provide insight into the journey of the grapes from the terraced vineyards to the iconic rabelo boats that once transported the wine downstream.
